News Topical, Digital Desk : The Congress on Thursday opposed the special deep revision of voter lists in Bihar ahead of this year's assembly elections, saying it risks deliberate exclusion of voters from the rolls using state machinery.

In a statement, the Empowered Action Group (EAGLE) of Congress leaders and experts said that this revision of voter lists by the Election Commission is a cure which is worse than the disease.

Congress expressed opposition

Congress's organization general secretary KC Venugopal shared the statement on X. In the statement, the leaders said that by carrying out the revision exercise in Bihar and some other states, the Election Commission has accepted that not everything is right in the voter lists. Congress strongly opposes the Election Commission's proposal of a thorough revision in Bihar elections and then in other states.

The Congress said, the amendment means that the Election Commission will visit every household in Bihar and re-enroll every eligible voter after verification of identity and residential documents. In simple words, the Election Commission wants to completely scrap the current voter list and create a new voter list for the state. Lakhs of Union and state government officials will now decide who has the right documents and who does not and whom to vote for in the upcoming Bihar elections.
