News Topical, Digital Desk : In a significant move, the Ministry of AYUSH has launched a comprehensive "Yoga Protocol" for people with non-communicable diseases and at-risk groups. Launched by AYUSH Minister Prataprao Jadhav during the Yoga Mahotsav 2026 earlier this month, the initiative is being seen as a key measure to combat various lifestyle diseases.
This initiative was developed by the World Health Organization's Collaborating Centre for Traditional Medicine, located at the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, under the Ministry of AYUSH. The protocol is designed as evidence-based modules that integrate yogic practices into daily life in a simple and accessible way.
Relief from lifestyle diseases
An institute official said that India is today witnessing an alarming rise in non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, respiratory illnesses, and mental health disorders. According to recent estimates, these diseases account for nearly two-thirds of deaths in the country. This indicates a clear shift toward lifestyle-related diseases.
Recommended 30 to 60 minutes of yoga daily
The official explained that given the annual increase in mortality rates from non-communicable diseases, the need for preventive measures has become greater than ever. In this context, the new yoga protocol has gained significance. Based on scientific evidence and a clinical approach, this module recommends daily sessions of 30 to 60 minutes, including asanas, pranayama, meditation, and relaxation techniques. It is tailored to different fitness levels and health conditions.
Another official explained that the initiative aims to make yoga a lifelong companion for health and well-being. It includes everything from fun yoga modules for young children to mental health-focused routines for teenagers, mobility exercises for the elderly, and special guidelines for women and pregnant mothers.
