News Topical, Digital Desk : Many actors are actively pursuing filmmaking in addition to acting to tell stories they love. Actor Rajkummar Rao and his wife, actress Patralekha, have now joined this list.
After Toaster , the two are now producing Raftaar, which stars Rajkummar opposite actress Keerthy Suresh.
Rajkumar and Patralekhaa were preparing to become producers for 9 years.
Regarding becoming a producer, Rajkumar says, "I've been wanting to become a producer for some time. The plan was first hatched in 2017-18, but things didn't work out at that time. Then the pandemic hit, which caused a setback. Since Patralekhaa and I have been acting for a long time, and we're both actors, it was a natural progression to start making our own films and starting our own production house."
The responsibility of production rests on Patralekha's shoulders.
After Toaster, Patralekhaa also produced her next film, Raftaar. The company belongs to both of us, but Patralekhaa is acting as producer and managing it single-handedly. I have no involvement in it. There are many stories that you want to tell yourself, in your own way, and create with your own people. Toaster was born with this idea in mind.
Patralekha worked even during her pregnancy
Patralekha is his wife, and regarding her responsibility as Home Minister, Rajkumar smiles and says, "Patralekha is not the Home Minister, but the President. Just as our country's President is a woman, every woman is the President of her home. I was also very happy and surprised by how beautifully she performed this role, both during her pregnancy and after delivery. I express my heartfelt respect for her."
Rajkumar considers it important to pay attention to certain things when becoming a producer. He says that lunch and dinner breaks should be on time. "I think the biggest thing we've learned over all these years on set is to feed people on time, and give them good food."
Rajkumar takes special care of the unit
If the shoot is outdoors, there must be good accommodations and, most importantly, timely payment. I'm not just talking about the actors, but the entire unit, which is approximately 95 percent of the crew. These are all they need. They don't have any other major demands. We even decided in our internal meetings that our team would definitely have these basic amenities. Otherwise, we've often seen lunch breaks delayed or missed, and payments delayed.
Making a comedy film is difficult.
Rajkumar is one of those actors who can effortlessly juggle serious roles with comedy. However, comedic actors don't receive the same respect. In this context, he says that perhaps people assume drama is difficult to make, while comedy is even more challenging. Perhaps this genre is less popular with critics, which is why it receives less attention.
Expressing the joy of becoming a father
Besides acting, Rajkumar considers waking up in the morning and drinking coffee an important part of his life. He says, "I love drinking coffee in the morning." Speaking about the changes in himself since becoming a father of a daughter last year, Rajkumar says, "I think becoming a parent is the most beautiful thing in the world. Those who don't want to become one, that's their decision. I think you miss something if you don't experience this emotion."
Rajkumar was on paternity leave for five months.
Rajkumar also considers paternity leave very important. He says that the responsibility is not only the mother's, but the father's as well. "I myself was on leave for five months. I didn't work during that time. I recently started shooting for the film Dada. It's very important for a father to be with his child."
Rajkummar Rao is miserly in real life too
In Toaster, Rajkummar played a miserly man. In real life, he talks about being very frugal with his time. He says, "I'm very conscious of my time. What I spend my time on is the most important thing."
