News Topical, Digital Desk : The Madhya Pradesh High Court will hear on Wednesday a petition seeking interim relief against the arrest warrant issued by the MP-MLA Court in Bhopal against Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The case was listed for hearing before the single bench of High Court Justice Pramod Kumar Agarwal, but after considering it for some time, the court made arrangements for the case to be heard on Wednesday.
The case relates to a plea seeking a stay on an arrest warrant issued by a subordinate court in a defamation case filed by Akash Vijayvargiya, son of senior BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh government minister Kailash Vijayvargiya.
Abhishek Banerjee had called Akash Vijayvargiya a "goonda" (thug) at a rally in Kolkata in November 2020. Akash filed a defamation suit against him in 2021 over this statement.
The case has been under trial in the MP-MLA court in Bhopal since May 1, 2021, but Abhishek Banerjee failed to appear. Consequently, the court issued arrest warrants against him for August 11 and August 26.
Abhishek filed a petition in the High Court challenging the arrest warrant. An application seeking interim relief has been submitted along with this petition.
