A case of harassment of a student of Chennai-based Anna University has come to light. A biryani seller has been arrested on this charge. The student studies in the engineering college of the university. In the complaint given to the police, she said that when she was talking to her male friend behind a building in the college campus at around 8 pm on 23 December 2024, an unknown person threatened her. The student said in her complaint that the accused sexually harassed her. In a statement issued by the Greater Chennai City Police, it was said that the student lodged a complaint at the Kotturpuram Women's Police Station and the case has been registered and the investigation is going on.

"During the investigation, based on scientific evidence, Gnanasekaran of Kottur (an area near the college) was arrested. The suspect has given his confession. He runs a biryani stall on the footpath," the police said. The police said they were investigating whether he had committed other crimes. "CCTV cameras have been installed in the university campus and security personnel have been appointed," it said. The police said appropriate action would be taken to enhance the safety of students after consultation with the university authorities and a "joint security review" would be conducted.

The university's internal complaints committee has also started an investigation.
