New Delhi: Vice Admiral Dr Aarti Sareen took over as Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) on Tuesday. She is the first woman officer to hold this post. In her long career spanning 38 years, she has handled many important responsibilities.

Most importantly, he has the rare distinction of having served in all three services of the Indian Armed Forces. He has served in the Indian Army from Lieutenant to Captain, in the Indian Navy from Surgeon Lieutenant to Surgeon Vice Admiral and in the Indian Air Force as an Air Marshal.

Worked on prestigious posts like Director and Commandant of Pune

According to the Defence Ministry, prior to taking over as the 46th DGAFMS, the Flag Officer has held prestigious appointments such as Director General Medical Services Navy, Director General Medical Services Air Force and Director and Commandant of Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune.

Sareen is an alumnus of AFMC Pune and was commissioned into the Armed Forces Medical Services in December 1985. She holds an MD in Radiodiagnosis from AFMC Pune and Diplomate National Board in Radiation Oncology from Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai.

Also get training in knife surgery

He has also received training in Gamma Knife Surgery from the University of Pittsburgh. The Defense Ministry said that Sarin has been awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2024 and the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2021 for his outstanding services. He has also been awarded the Chief of Army Staff Commendation (2017), Chief of Naval Staff Commendation (2001) and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Commendation (2013) for distinguished service.

Sareen has also recently been appointed by the Supreme Court as a member of the National Task Force to formulate safe working conditions and protocols for medical professionals. The Defence Ministry said that she has been at the forefront of motivating young women to join the armed forces and is also a symbol of the government's Nari Shakti initiative.
