News Topical, Digital Desk : The US Supreme Court has agreed to examine the constitutionality of President Donald Trump's executive order ending birthright citizenship, a controversial part of his efforts to curb immigration.
The justices were considering the Justice Department's appeal of a lower court ruling that blocked Trump's executive order directing US agencies to stop recognizing the citizenship of children born in the US.
What was Trump's order?
According to Trump's order, children should not receive US citizenship if neither of their parents is a US citizen or legal permanent resident (also known as a green card holder).
What did the Supreme Court say?
The lower court ruled that Trump's policy violates the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution and federal law codifying birthright citizenship rights. The ruling was issued in a class action lawsuit filed by parents and children whose citizenship is at risk.
When will the decision come?
The US Supreme Court has not yet set a date to hear arguments. A ruling on Trump's order is expected by the end of June next year.
