News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump has hinted that the US could take Iran's oil and seize Kharg Island, Iran's main oil export hub.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Trump said he would like to seize control of oil. He compared the US military operation in Iran to operations in Venezuela earlier this year, where Washington gained control of the Latin American country's oil industry after capturing its leader, Nicolas Maduro.
Signal given for occupation of Kharg Island
He said, "To be honest, I would love to get Iranian oil the most, but some stupid people in America say , 'Why are you doing this?'" He hinted that the move could mean seizing Kharg Island. "We may seize Kharg Island, and we may not. We have a number of options. It would also mean we have to stay there (on Kharg Island) for a while," Trump said.
'Talks with Iran are progressing'
He also claimed that indirect talks between the US and Iran, mediated by Pakistani envoys, are moving forward and making positive progress. But he declined to provide any details on whether a potential agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be reached in the coming days.
'Special gift from Iran'
Trump also said that as a gift to Washington, Tehran had allowed more Pakistani-flagged oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. According to the US leader, the number had increased from 10 to 20. However, this could not be confirmed.
Trump further claimed that Iran's Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, had approved the additional shipments. According to US media reports, Ghalibaf was the president's choice as the next supreme leader. He said, "He's the one who authorized the ships."
Trump further claimed that Tehran was witnessing a "regime change" after the initial strikes killed longtime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other senior officials.
