News Topical, Digital Desk : After 17 years of exile in London, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting president Tarique Rahman arrived in Dhaka on Thursday with his wife and daughter.

The withdrawal comes as the country grapples with violence following the assassination of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Hadi's death has heightened tensions across Bangladesh and prompted the resignation of a special assistant to the Home Ministry.

Tarique Rahman, the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, is considered a prominent figure in the BNP. Party workers are preparing to give him a grand welcome. Hundreds of thousands of supporters are braving the winter cold and gathering at Dhaka airport and surrounding areas.

Tariq Rahman preparing for his comeback

A Bangladesh state-owned airline flight carrying Tariq Rahman, his wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman, and daughter Zaima Rahman arrived in Dhaka. The flight first stopped at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet, landing around 10 a.m. and then proceeded to Hazrat Shahjahan International Airport in Dhaka.

Tight security arrangements have been made at the airport. The interim government has promised full support to the BNP's demands. The party claims that approximately 5 million workers and supporters have gathered in Dhaka.

From the airport, Tariq Rahman will head straight to a welcome ceremony on 300 Feet Road in Purvanchal, where he will deliver a brief speech. He will then visit his ailing mother, Khaleda Zia, in the hospital.

Hadi's killing fuels tensions in Bangladesh

The main source of tension in the country is the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Hadi was one of the leading figures in the student movement against the Sheikh Hasina government last year. He was shot by masked assailants while leaving a mosque in Dhaka on December 12th. He was flown to Singapore in critical condition, where he died on December 18th.

As news of Hadi's death spread, violence erupted across the country. Protesters attacked and set fire to the offices of major newspapers, The Daily Star and Pratham Alo. Several locations were vandalized, and one person was killed. On Wednesday, a bomb was thrown from a flyover in Dhaka's Moghbazar area.

Resignation in Home Ministry

Amid allegations of delays in the investigation into Hadi's killing and security failures, Special Assistant to the Interior Ministry Khuda Baksh Chaudhry resigned. Protesters have demanded the resignation of the Home Affairs Adviser and other officials. Pressure is mounting on the interim government to swiftly apprehend the killers and ensure justice.

The BNP views Tarique Rahman's return as a major political opportunity. His presence will strengthen the party ahead of the parliamentary elections in February. However, the ongoing unrest and violence in the country are raising concerns. The government has appealed for calm and ordered security forces to remain vigilant.
