News Topical, Digital Desk : Women from the Indian diaspora and other countries celebrated the beauty, heritage, artistry and empowerment of women through the community of the sari during a special event at New York's famous Times Square.
Colourful and varied styles of saris filled the popular venue. The second edition of the "Saree Goes Global" event was organised on Sunday by New York-based charity organisation Uma Global in collaboration with the Indian Consulate.

According to Uma Global, this year's festival saw participation from India, Bangladesh, Britain, West Indies, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, several cities in the US and local New York residents.
The tradition of the sari is thousands of years old.
Pragya Singh, Counselor at the Consulate General of India in New York, highlighted the sari's deep cultural history and diversity. She said the sari is one of the world's oldest continuously worn garments, with a tradition dating back thousands of years. Its myriad styles, ways of wearing, and fabrics reflect India's extraordinary diversity and artistic heritage.
A letter from New York Governor Kathy Hochul commended the event's contributions to diversity, empowerment, and community engagement. Dr. Rita Kakati Shah, President of Uma Global, said, "This special event connects us all and, in doing so, celebrates the voices of women, youth, and the beauty of the sari."
