Ravana accepted his mistake and anointed Lord Shiva with Ganga water to please him.
It is said that Ravana was the first one to bring Gangajal in a Kaanvad using a special method. He used Kaanvad to bring that water and brought it on his shoulder. Following this tradition, even today Shiva devotees walk with Kaanvad on their shoulders.
