News Topical, Digital Desk : Bangladesh witnessed massive unrest late last night. Protesters went on a rampage in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Numerous buildings and vehicles were set on fire.
Following the death of Inquilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, violence erupted in the neighboring country, worsening the situation. Several media outlets were also targeted. Mobs vandalized the offices of Prothom Alo and set fire to The Daily Star building in Karwan Bazar. Several journalists were also attempted to be burned alive.
Why did violence erupt again in Bangladesh?
Sharif Osman Hadi, a spokesperson for the Inquilab Manch who played a key role in the movement against the rule of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, recently died in Singapore. His death sparked widespread unrest in Dhaka. Protesters set several media outlets on fire late at night. Protesters also set Awami League offices in Rajshahi on fire.
The head of the interim government called an emergency meeting
The violence that has erupted in Bangladesh has put law and order in the dock. Meanwhile, interim government head Mohammad Yunus has called a high-level meeting. According to reports, a large number of people gathered at Shahabad Square after news of Hadi's death broke. The angry crowd then blocked the intersection. During this, the protesters waved placards and accused the government of failing to ensure Hadi's security.
Protesters set several buildings on fire
According to reports, protesters first attacked the office of Pratham Alo located in Karwan Bazaar. They set several shops, including furniture, on fire. They also targeted and attacked journalists from several media organizations.
Hadi died in Singapore
It is noteworthy that on December 12th, unknown assailants shot Inquilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi during election campaigning in the Bijoynagar area of Dhaka. As Hadi's condition deteriorated, he was initially admitted to Dhaka for treatment. However, he was later flown to Singapore by air ambulance on December 15th for treatment.
Yumus appealed to the people for peace
He died while undergoing treatment in Singapore. Hadi's death was confirmed by the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry and Singapore officials. Upon receiving news of Hadi's death, people erupted in anger and took to the streets. Meanwhile, Muhammad Yunus appealed for peace.
