The US Federal Aviation Administration has issued a notice stating that all flights will be grounded for the time being, meaning no flights will be able to take off. An Air Canada Express plane collided with a fire engine parked at the airport, severely damaging the aircraft's tail section. Several people were injured in the accident.
Landings at La Guardia Airport were also prevented.
Following the accident, flights headed to La Guardia Airport are being diverted. Takeoffs and landings have been suspended. Numerous videos and photos of the accident have been shared on social media.
The plane involved in the accident was a CRJ-900, flying from Montreal, Canada, to New York. According to the flight tracking website Flightradar 24, the plane struck the ground vehicle at a speed of approximately 24 miles per hour (39 kilometers per hour).
The plane was operated by Jazz Aviation, a regional partner airline of Air Canada. Following the accident, the US aviation regulator, the FAA, issued a separate notice to airmen, saying the airport could remain closed until 18:00 GMT.
When two planes collided at the airport
A major plane crash occurred in October 2025. Two Delta Air Lines planes collided on a taxiway, with the wing of one plane striking the cockpit of the other. In October 2016, a plane carrying then-Vice President Mike Pence skidded off Runway 22 and landed in the grass.
La Guardia Airport has been a challenging time for pilots. Surrounded by water and with a short runway, landing and takeoff require extreme caution.
