News Topical, Digital Desk : A crime against which there is no law in India's judicial system: marital rape. Does a woman's refusal after marriage have no meaning? Does marriage give a man the right to abuse a woman in any way? The web series Chiraiya seeks answers to these serious and important questions.
Chiraiya, currently streaming on Jio Hotstar, tackles the serious issue of marital rape and directly attacks the deeply entrenched patriarchy in society. Let's find out how the web series Chiraiya is faring.
What is the story of Chiraiya?
The story centers on Kamlesh (Divya Dutta), a traditional and cultured daughter-in-law living in an elite family in Lucknow. The family is ruled by her father-in-law (Sanjay Mishra). Kamlesh prides herself on upholding family traditions, even ignoring some patriarchal rules. She is also extremely proud of her brother-in-law, whom she loves like her own son. Furthermore, she believes he can do no wrong.
The story takes a turn when the brother-in-law gets married and after the wedding, his newly married daughter-in-law Pooja (Prasanna Bisht) reveals that her husband Arun (Siddharth Shaw) has been sexually abusing her and forcing her into physical relations without her consent since their first night.
At first, Kamlesh denies it, but when the truth comes out, she's devastated and determined to punish her brother-in-law. But can Kamlesh secure justice for Pooja, a law that has been passed? This will only be revealed by watching the series.
Chiraiya Web Series Review
Directed by Shashant Shah, this series is a brilliant attempt to address the serious and sensitive issue of marital rape. It also powerfully attacks patriarchy. The role of the family in raising sons, women's oppression of women, discrimination between sons and daughters, and homosexuality are also addressed with ease.
Additionally, the series' message is strong and thought-provoking. Divya Dutta delivers a stellar performance as the daughter-in-law and sister-in-law of the house. Sanjay Mishra delivers a good performance as the head of the family, and the rest of the cast also delivers well-played roles.
Where is the deficiency?
Despite raising such powerful issues, the series ultimately fails to fully compel the perpetrators to reflect. This fight against marital rape and patriarchy begins and ends with women. Ultimately, it doesn't seem to have any significant impact or reaction on the perpetrator or the other men in the household.
Additionally, the story feels stretched over six episodes. Even a two-hour movie would have been better told. The climax could have been better.
Should I watch it or not?
This series, which raises big issues of the society, is a must watch on Jio Hotstar – watch it once, because it forces you to think and raise questions.
