News Topical, Digital Desk : Rajya Sabha elections were recently held in several states across the country, in which cross-voting in Haryana, Odisha, and Bihar proved detrimental to the Congress. Cross-voting within the Congress party in Haryana has occurred before, but this time the issue appears to be escalating. Congress leaders are demanding strict action against MLAs who cross-voted. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, referring to the Rajya Sabha elections held in the state during the previous Congress government, said that the membership of MLAs who cross-voted should be revoked.
Ashok Gehlot said that the cross-voting by Congress MLAs in Haryana, Odisha, and Bihar in the recent Rajya Sabha elections is very unfortunate. Our leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge are fighting to save democracy. At such a time, it is beyond comprehension that MLAs are daring to cross-vote despite having their votes displayed.
'We showed commitment to the party'
He further said, "This reminded me of the Rajya Sabha elections held in Rajasthan between 2018 and 2023, where we demonstrated our commitment to the party high command and the party. Despite Congress having only 102 MLAs, 126 MLAs voted in favor of the Congress Rajya Sabha candidates, while the votes of these additional 24 MLAs were not visible to the Congress observers. This was possible without any greed or avarice, solely due to the goodwill generated by the high command's trust in us."
Voting rules need to be changed
Gehlot also said, "Now the biggest need is to change the voting rules in Rajya Sabha elections, which Congress should demand. If any MLA votes against the party in Rajya Sabha elections, his membership should be cancelled. The process of voting by merely showing the vote is now proving insufficient to stop the horse-trading taking place in Rajya Sabha elections."
