This is the first time after the implementation of UCC in Uttarakhand that a couple has legally obtained permission to live in a live-in relationship. This decision is an important step towards giving formal and legal recognition to live-in relationships in the state. Under the Uniform Civil Code, it has been made mandatory for couples wishing to live in a live-in relationship to register. For this, a 16-page detailed form has to be filled, in which many important information has to be given.
The following conditions apply in this registration process:
1. Applicants must be of legal marriageable age – minimum 21 years for male and 18 years for female.
2. Applicants must provide proof that they are not currently in any other marital relationship.
3. Details of previous live-in relationships (if any) must be given.
4. Consent of both parties will be mandatory and it will be legally certified through documents.
5. A prescribed fee has to be deposited for registration.
According to sources, the first registration has been done from Dehradun district. Although it has not been officially confirmed by the district administration yet, the couple has been legally allowed to live in a live-in relationship, considering the relevant documents to be valid. Apart from this, an application has also been received from another district, which the police is investigating. Other applications will be approved only after the documents are confirmed. The Uttarakhand government has decided to legally register live-in relationships under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) so that such relationships can be given legal protection and disputes related to it can be avoided.
After the implementation of Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand, registration has been made mandatory to bring live-in relationships under the legal ambit. This will ensure that no person can be kept in live-in relationships fraudulently. If a couple wants to get married in future, their legal status should be clear. Women and children should not be deprived of their legal rights. Social and legal disputes related to live-in relationships can be prevented.
Live-in relationships will be legally protected.
With the implementation of this new law in Uttarakhand, there is a possibility of a change in the traditional thinking about live-in relationships in the society. Till now live-in relationships did not have legal recognition, due to which many times couples living in such relationships had to face social and legal difficulties. Now, with this registration being mandatory under the Uniform Civil Code, live-in relationships will be legally protected and disputes related to it can also be prevented.
The Uttarakhand government has started the process of live-in registration and now more and more couples can apply to get their relationship legally recognized. This decision is being considered a big step towards new social change, which can also become an example for other states in the future. At present, it will be interesting to see how many more couples come forward with this law in Uttarakhand in the coming days and adopt this registration.
