News Topical, Digital Desk : Have you ever noticed that as soon as someone complains of weight gain or diabetes, the first thing the doctor says is - "Stop eating roti-rice", but the question is that our ancestors have been eating the same for thousands of years, then why did they not get these diseases?

The secret is hidden in 'unprocessed' grains

The rice or flour used to make roti from which our grandfathers used to eat was actually unprocessed i.e. unpolished. In this form, the grains contain plenty of fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These nutrients used to give strength to the body and protect it from diseases.

But today the rice and flour available in the market reaches our plate after being processed. When its outer part is removed, the essential nutrients also go away from it. What remains is only white rice or maida, which is almost full of starch i.e. sugar (Side Effects of Roti And Rice).

The Real Problem with White Rice and Flour

When we eat this starch, it immediately turns into sugar in the body.  The amount of sugar in our bloodstream  is already limited. When this limit is crossed, the pressure on insulin increases and gradually diseases like diabetes are born.

Lack of fiber makes the problem even more serious:

  • the stomach empties quickly
  • Feeling hungry frequently
  • Eating habits deteriorate
  • And the most dangerous thing is that you get addicted to sweet/carbohydrate foods.

Industry's game and our mistake

The food industry knows very well that the more  processed food  we eat, the more we will feel hungry again and again and when we eat more, the sales of their products will also increase. This is the reason why white rice, refined flour and such things are sold indiscriminately in the market.

But when we gain weight or face problems like diabetes, we are blamed - "You have taken too many calories, you don't understand." Whereas the truth is that the real fault is not ours, but of processed food, which has spoiled our habits.

What is the solution?

  • Eat unprocessed or minimally processed grains as much as possible.
  • Include brown rice, multigrain flour and coarse grains like jowar, bajra, ragi.
  • Make sure to eat fruits and vegetables rich in fiber.
  • And most importantly - eat grains in the right form instead of "giving up on roti-chawal".
