Nusrat was saddened by the death of RD Burman
Shekhar Kapur said, "I went to a music studio in Lahore where the tunes of Mr. India were playing. The musicians were sitting and playing the tunes of Mr. India and then Masoom. I got very emotional that they were doing this. I told Khan Sahab (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) that this is a bit different. We sit and work on the music. While doing the music, I remember one day we were sitting in Lahore, during that time RD Burman passed away. He was a great fan of RD Burman."
The song was sung after looking into the eyes of the director

Regarding this, Shekhar said, " She (Nusrat) said, 'Do one thing, I will look into your eyes, and you watch the film.' He sang that song in grief over RD Burman's death. He was overwhelmed with grief for RD Burman. He was singing the song in grief for RD Burman. He was looking into my eyes, and the video of that scene was playing in the background. "
Shekhar Kapur also revealed that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan wasn't originally going to sing "Chhoti Si Umar." When he heard the song, he asked him to sing it. That's how Nusrat sang the sad song.
