News Topical, Digital Desk : On the sixth anniversary of actor Irrfan's death, director Ranjeeta Kaur is bringing a documentary on him, "A Story That Refused to Die." A special screening will be held today (April 29) at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai.
The film is based on 14 years of unseen footage (BTS) from the Irrfan Khan starrer "Paan Singh Tomar." Regarding the film, Ranjita said, "I never thought I would be able to make this. Irrfan 's wife, Sutapa, has seen the documentary, but their sons, Babil and Ayaan, will see it for the first time today."
This is how the documentary was made
Narrating the story of this documentary, Ranjita says, “I had shot the behind the scenes (BTS) of the film. The shooting and BTS of the film were over in 2009. We were waiting for the release. Three years later, in 2012, I got a call that we are releasing the film. I had to edit that BTS. I sent the tapes because I was working on another project. By then, all the tapes had got spoiled because they had got damp. I was heartbroken. Anyway, the film was released. After eight-nine months, I found the same footage again in a hard drive. Then I felt that I should make a documentary because the experience of shooting the film was amazing.”
When Irfan said, won't you even look at me?
Ranjeeta spoke with Irrfan two or three times on the film's set. She recounts one incident, saying,
It is necessary to bring it on OTT
Regarding the documentary's release, Ranjita added, "Right now, we want it to go to various festivals where people can see it. Then we'll release it on an OTT platform. Not everyone can see it at festivals, and Irrfan has fans everywhere, so it's important to bring it to OTT."
Many problems arose
Ranjita says, "I ran out of money while making it. Then I stopped it. We were on the set of Bullet Raja when news broke that Paan Singh Tomar had won the National Film Award. Tigmanshu sir asked me what had happened when I was making a documentary. I told him I had run out of money. He said he would cover the entire cost."
