News Topical, Digital Desk : Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will arrive in Washington on Monday to meet US President Donald Trump to take forward the ongoing talks for peace in Ukraine. Along with him, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen will also meet Trump at the White House.
All of them will put pressure on Trump to change his stance of first a peace agreement and then a ceasefire to end the war in Ukraine. After Trump's talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, the US President has suggested Zelensky to enter into a peace agreement. Earlier, Russia was talking about an agreement for long-term peace in Ukraine. A ceasefire was to happen after this peace agreement.
Russia objects to ceasefire
On Sunday, Russian President Putin said that the land transaction between Russia and Ukraine should also be clarified in the peace agreement so that there is no dispute in the future. In talks with Trump, Putin has also agreed to give security guarantees to Ukraine. Russia has objected to the first ceasefire because it feels that Ukraine will use this time to increase its military capability.
This is because the Ukrainian army has been falling behind on the war front for the last several months and the Russian army is slowly advancing in Ukraine. The German government has said that in the talks to be held on Monday, Zelensky and European leaders will discuss the provisions of the peace agreement, security guarantees, territorial issues related to land and cooperation with Ukraine. After talks with Putin in Alaska, Trump has described Russia as a great power and advised Zelensky to make a peace agreement and end the war.
Earlier, Trump had asked Ukraine to be ready for land exchange. In the talks, Putin expects Ukraine to give up the entire Donetsk province, 70 percent of whose territory has been occupied by the Russian army. The Ukraine war, which has been going on for three and a half years, is the bloodiest war since the Second World War. So far, more than one million people from both countries have been killed or injured in this.
