News Topical, Digital Desk : The ongoing tensions in the Middle East show no signs of abating. Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is straining the global energy market. Iran has requested the deployment of naval ships to help secure the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital oil shipping route, typically carrying about a fifth of the world's oil trade, and Iran has repeatedly imposed sanctions and threatened to block it.
Meanwhile, US President Trump is working to fully reopen the Strait. He says the US will take action if shipping in the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted.
Trump appeals to seven countries for help in the Strait of Hormuz
US President Trump said he has asked about seven countries to send warships to help keep the Strait of Hormuz open amid the ongoing war with Iran.
Trump said his administration is in talks with seven countries regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. He didn't name any of the countries, but noted that they are highly dependent on Middle Eastern oil.
20% of global oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz
It's noteworthy that Trump's statement comes as he is about to announce a global coalition to safely evacuate ships through the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait typically carries about 20% of global oil exports. Global oil prices have been steadily rising following sanctions imposed on Iran.
Meanwhile, Trump said, " The countries we're talking to about monitoring the Strait of Hormuz are the main producers. I'm asking that these countries come and protect their territory, because it's their territory. It would be great if other countries would join us in monitoring. And we'll help them, and work with them."
