News Topical, Digital Desk : On this day (December 16, 1971), the Indian Army achieved a historic victory during the 1971 India-Pakistan War. The war lasted for 13 days and ultimately ended with the surrender of Pakistani troops. Bangladesh gained independence with the end of this war. Pakistan surrendered before the valor of Indian soldiers. Approximately 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered. President Draupadi Murmu, PM Modi, and Amit Shah have paid tribute to the soldiers of this war.
President Draupadi Murmu wrote on social media, "On the occasion of Vijay Diwas, I pay my respectful homage to the brave sons of Mother India. Their courage, valor, and unwavering devotion to the motherland have always made the nation proud. Their valor and patriotism will continue to inspire the countrymen. The Indian Army's 'Empowerment through Indigenization' initiative reflects its commitment to be prepared for future challenges. In Operation Sindoor, the Army demonstrated self-reliance, strategic prowess, and effective use of modern warfare, which is an inspiration to the entire nation. I extend my best wishes to all the soldiers and their families. Jai Hind!"
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his message on X, said, "On Vijay Diwas, we remember the brave soldiers whose courage and sacrifice gave India a historic victory in 1971. Their determination and selfless service protected our nation and marked a moment of pride in our history. Salute to their bravery. This day reminds us of their unmatched spirit. Their valour will continue to inspire generations of the nation."
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to the brave soldiers and martyrs on social media and wrote, "On this day in 1971, the security forces, with their indomitable courage and precise strategy, defeated the Pakistani army and forced it to surrender. This victory, becoming a shield against injustice and oppression, presented an ideal example of protecting humanity across the world and proved the unique military capability and valour of the Indian Armed Forces. On Vijay Diwas, I salute the brave martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice of their lives in the war."
