News Topical, Digital Desk : Amid tensions in the Middle East, the world is facing a fuel shortage. Meanwhile, India has taken a significant step and purchased 176,000 tons of LPG from the United States.

According to S&P Commodities at Sea (CAS), India's weekly LPG imports fell to 265,000 tonnes in the week ended March 19, from 322,000 tonnes on March 5. West Asia's flows fell to just 89,000 tonnes in the week ended March 19, the lowest since January 2026.

How much can India import from America?

However, the report said alternative regional supplies increased to 176,000 tonnes in the week to March 19, mainly from the US. The report said Indian oil marketing companies could import 2.2 million tonnes of LPG from the US in 2026.

India is considering several other options

CAS data shows that US LPG loadings to India are increasing, with volumes now exceeding those from traditional Gulf suppliers. Petroleum Ministry officials confirmed that some vessels from the US have already arrived, but did not provide numbers.

With officials describing LPG availability as "worrying", India is trying to secure cooking gas from diverse sources, including Russia and Japan.

LPG supplies from West Asia take 7-8 days to reach India. Cargoes from the US take about 45 days, while those from Russia and Japan can take 35-40 days, officials said. India imports about 60% of its LPG needs, and about 90% comes from West Asia.
