News Topical, Digital Desk : Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday claimed that the real intention behind the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls is to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) through the back door.
Speaking to reporters after garlanding the statue of BR Ambedkar at Red Road in Kolkata on the occasion of Constitution Day, Mamata attacked the BJP and the central government, saying that even after so many years of independence, questions are being raised on the citizenship of people.

Earlier, in a post on X, he said that when democracy is at stake, secularism is 'under threat' and federalism is being 'demolished', people must protect the valuable guidance provided by the Constitution.
Mamata said the Constitution is the backbone of the nation, skillfully weaving together the diversity of India's cultures, languages, and communities. She wrote, "Today, on this Constitution Day, I pay my deepest respect and homage to our great Constitution, the great document that unites us in India."
I also pay tribute to the visionary framers of our Constitution, especially its chief architect, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Mamata also paid tribute to the members of the Constituent Assembly from Bengal who played a "pivotal role in shaping the Constitution."

He said, I believe that our Constitution is the backbone of our nation, skillfully weaving together the immense diversity of our cultures, languages and communities into a unified, federal structure.
On this sacred day, we reaffirm our commitment to the core democratic values enshrined in our Constitution and resolve to vigilantly defend the sacred principles that define and sustain us as a nation.
He said that at a critical time when democracy is at stake, when secularism is under threat, and when federalism is being dismantled, we must safeguard the valuable guidance provided by our Constitution. It should be noted that Constitution Day has been celebrated every year on November 26th since 2015 to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution. The Constitution was adopted on November 26th, 1949.
