A street in North London known as Billionaires' Row, behind its tall bushes and black gates, lies a multitude of empty mansions. The luxury homes here are home to a network stretching from Tehran to Dubai and Frankfurt.
The true ownership of this London property is traced through shell companies to Mojtaba Khamenei, one of the most powerful figures in the Middle East. The 56-year-old is widely considered a likely successor to Ayatollah Khamenei.
According to Western intelligence agencies, their financial power includes everything from Persian Gulf shipping to Swiss bank accounts and British property worth more than 100 million pounds ($138 million).
According to reports, the network of firms created by Mojtaba has helped Khamenei send billions of dollars, despite US sanctions imposed on him in 2019.
Where does the money come from?
Mojtaba's properties include prime real estate in several of London's most exclusive areas. Khamenei's son purchased a house in 2014 for 33.7 million euros.
Mojtaba also owns a villa in Dubai's Beverly Hills area and expensive European hotels from Frankfurt to Mallorca.
According to documents seen by Bloomberg and people familiar with the matter, the funds for these transactions were sent from bank accounts in the UK, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and the United Arab Emirates. The people say these funds primarily came from the sale of Iranian oil.
