News Topical, Digital Desk : Political activity in the state has intensified ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Meanwhile, NDA ally Jayant Chaudhary's Rashtriya Lok Dal has made a major move. According to reports, the RLD has staked its claim to the Sardhana seat in Meerut from the BJP. The party's move comes at a time when the political battle for supremacy between two prominent BJP leaders in western Uttar Pradesh, Sanjeev Baliyan and Sangeet Som, has become public.

The feud between former BJP MLA Sangeet Som and former MP Sanjeev Balyan began in 2022 when Som lost the Sardhana seat, after which he blamed Balyan for not securing Jat votes. In 2024, Sanjeev Balyan also blamed Som for his defeat, blaming him for not securing Thakur votes.

The decision comes amid a turmoil within the BJP

The controversy gained momentum last Sunday when Sanjeev Balyan attended an event in Sardhana attended by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and MP Hanuman Beniwal. During the event, Balyan stated that he would never forget the insult and that he would avenge it. Balyan was apparently referring to Sangeet Som.

According to a Times of India report, following this controversy, senior RLD leaders have admitted that the alliance has staked claim to three seats in Meerut, including the Sardhana seat. These include Sardhana, Siwalkhas, and Kithore assembly constituencies. The RLD contested the 2022 elections in alliance with the Samajwadi Party, and the BJP lost all three seats.

Sardhana seat may be given to RLD

RLD MLA Ghulam Mohammad from Siwalkhas, SP MLA Shahid Manzoor from Kithore, and SP's Atul Pradhan from Sardhana defeated BJP's Sangeet Som by 18,000 votes. According to sources, giving this seat to the RLD could avoid a conflict between Sangeet Som and Baliyan, and could bring together Jat and Thakur voters to support the RLD.

Political experts also believe that by giving the Sardhana seat to the RLD, the BJP can overcome the rivalry between the two leaders. Sardhana is not just a seat, but is considered the heart of Jatland. A win in this seat could send a significant message to western Uttar Pradesh.
