News Topical, Digital Desk : The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Delhi Police Commissioner to produce advocate Mukut Nath Verma, who allegedly made derogatory remarks against Supreme Court judges, before the court on February 23.
The court has also asked for legal punitive measures to be taken for this. Verma is also accused of making derogatory remarks against the members of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) election committee. SCBA President and senior advocate Vikas Singh and senior advocate Vijay Hansaria, who is also the head of the election committee, told the bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi that the Delhi Police had failed to execute the bailable warrants issued earlier and could not trace the lawyer.
The court was hearing a petition related to reforms in the SCBA in 2023. It had earlier taken strong cognizance of Verma's complaint against the election committee members at the Tilak Marg police station, calling it "condemnable and frivolous."
The bench also directed Verma to appear in court on May 29, 2025, and warned him of severe punitive action if he remained absent. Although he appeared online, the court insisted on his physical presence.
The court later issued bailable warrants against them, but the police failed to locate them and the warrants were returned unfulfilled. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court directed SCBA Secretary Pragya Baghel to compile the suggestions of the bar association, retired Supreme Court judges LN Rao and Vijay Hansaria, in tabular form, so that necessary directions could be issued.
