News Topical, Digital Desk : Health Risks of Using a Phone on the Toilet: Taking a mobile phone to the toilet has become a common habit these days. Many people think they can sit for a while and scroll through social media or play a game, but experts warn that sitting on the toilet for too long can be dangerous for their health. This habit not only causes hemorrhoids, but in severe cases, can also lead to a condition called prolapse of the rectum.
What do experts say?
According to a CNN report, Dr. Lai Shue, a colorectal surgeon at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, USA, said that when patients present with complaints related to stomach or bowel movements, a major cause of the problem is the habit of spending too much time on the toilet. Dr. Farah Monzur, a gastroenterologist at Stony Brook Medicine in New York, says that generally speaking, a safe time to sit on the toilet should not exceed 5 to 10 minutes.
Doctors explain that due to the design of the toilet seat and the force of gravity, sitting for long periods of time puts the lower body under downward pressure. This causes the veins around the anus and rectum to fill with blood, but they cannot drain back properly. This results in the veins becoming swollen and increasing the risk of hemorrhoids. Constant straining and sitting for long periods also weakens the pelvic floor muscles, which control bowel movements. This weakening can lead to problems like constipation, difficulty holding urine or stool, and pain.
The case has been found in China
A case of this type has been reported in China. A man spent approximately 30 minutes daily sitting on the toilet playing video games on his mobile phone. One day, during a bowel movement, his rectum protruded approximately six inches from his body. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed rectal prolapse. According to doctors, the habit of sitting on the toilet for long periods of time and pre-existing weakness contributed to this serious condition.
Instead of pushing yourself too hard, get up and take a short walk.
Doctors advise against taking mobile phones, books, or magazines to the toilet. If you don't have a bowel movement within 10 minutes, get up and take a short walk instead of straining. It's also important to drink plenty of water and eat fiber-rich foods like pulses, oats, and vegetables. If you experience prolonged constipation, bleeding, or an unusually long bowel movement, don't ignore it. Consulting a doctor early can prevent serious complications.
