There is a tremendous increase in the demand for wheelchairs at major airports in India. Especially in flights going to the US and UK, every third passenger is asking for wheelchair assistance. However, while some passengers have a genuine need behind this increasing demand, some are misusing it to avoid long lines and early boarding. In such a situation, the government is preparing to revise the guidelines to prevent this misuse and ensure that people in genuine need are not stranded.

will have to pay fee

According to a Hindustan Times report, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is currently finalising a new framework, which is expected to be implemented by the end of May. Under the upcoming policy, free wheelchair service may be limited to passengers aged 60 years and above, while younger passengers may be required to show a valid medical certificate. There are also plans to charge a nominal fee from passengers seeking wheelchair assistance to the boarding gate.
