Idukki: In a major rape case verdict, a Kerala court on Friday sentenced a man from Madhya Pradesh to 33 years in prison for raping a 15-year-old girl from West Bengal in Poopara in the hill district of Kerala.

The accused is named Khemsing Ayyam who is the second accused in the case. The first accused Mahesh Kumar Yadav is absconding after getting bail. Khemsing Ayyam, 27, was sentenced to separate jail terms for offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the IPC. These sentences will run concurrently.
The prosecutor said the court also imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh on the convict which will be given to the victim. The court also recommended providing compensation to the victim as per the Victim Compensation Scheme and directed the District Legal Services Authority, Idukki-Thodupuzha accordingly, the SPP said.

Special Public Prosecutor Smiju K Das said that Mahesh Yadav had a friendly relationship with the girl's parents and the girl and also used to visit the victim's house. One day he lured the girl to Ayyam's house and raped her there. The incident took place in 2022. The prosecutor said that after this Ayyam threatened the girl and took her to Poopara where he raped her in a plantation
