The violence, arson, and vandalism caused by the Gen-Z movement cost the country's $42 billion economy approximately $586 million (approximately 4,900 crore Nepalese rupees).

In fact, according to an official statement issued by the interim government on Friday, Nepal suffered heavy losses in the violent protests that began three months ago in September. Seventy-seven people were killed and more than 2,000 injured. The protests became so violent that then-Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was forced to resign.

Damage to private and government property

The anti-corruption movement, led by Gen-Z youth, resulted in the destruction of public and private property, including the massive Singha Durbar office complex, the Prime Minister's Office, the Supreme Court, Parliament House, private residences of politicians, and commercial premises owned by individuals close to some politicians.

An official committee formed to assess the damage has estimated that the cost of reconstruction will exceed $252 million, according to a statement issued by the office of Sushila Karki, head of Nepal's interim government.

Reconstruction plans

Officials said the interim government has established an official fund to raise resources for reconstruction and has so far collected less than $1 million from the public and various institutions. However, the government has not stated how it plans to address the shortage of resources for reconstruction.

Chakraborty Kantha, senior engineer in charge of public infrastructure in the Urban Development Ministry, said that reconstruction of Singha Durbar, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Supreme Court and key ministries has already begun.
