News Topical, Digital Desk : US Finance Minister Scott Bessant has said that India and America, "both great countries", will soon resolve the problem of mutual tension.
He said Delhi's values are "closer to ours and China's values than to Russia's". He described the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as "largely a sham". His remarks came after the two-day annual summit of the SCO in the Chinese city of Tianjin.
'India is not responsible for the Russia-Ukraine war'
In an interview with Fox News, Besant also said that India, the world's most populous democracy, is not playing a major role in buying Russian oil and then reselling it, funding the Russian war effort in Ukraine.
'India is working in the national interest'
It is noteworthy that India has also defended its purchase of Russian crude oil, saying that its energy purchases are driven by national interest and market dynamics. Responding to questions about the state of India-US relations amid the imposition of a 50 percent tariff on India by the Trump administration on the purchase of Russian oil, Besant said that the slow progress in the US-India trade talks is also a reason for the White House to increase the tariff. However, India has termed the tariff imposed on it as unfair.
