News Topical, Digital Desk : India has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the seventh time. Its term will run from 2026 to 2028. India's three-year term will begin on January 1, 2026, the UNHRC said in an internet media post announcing the results of the election held on Tuesday.

India elected to UNHRC for the 7th time

India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, thanked all delegations for their overwhelming support in an internet media post. He said, "India has today been elected to the Human Rights Council for the seventh time for the 2026-28 term. This reflects India's unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms. We look forward to serving this cause during our tenure."

The UNHRC has 47 member countries.

The UNHRC consists of 47 Member States, who are elected to three-year terms under equitable geographical distribution rules in the UN General Assembly. India has previously served as a member of the UNHRC six times: from 2006-2007, 2008-2010, 2012-2014, 2015-2017, 2019-2021, and 2022-2024.

The Geneva-based UNHRC was established in 2006. Other countries elected for the 2026-2028 term include Angola, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Iraq, Italy, Mauritius, Pakistan, Slovenia, South Africa, the UK and Vietnam.
