News Topical, Digital Desk : During his visit to Indore, Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, told party leaders that he would raise the issue of contaminated drinking water in Bhagirathpura, Indore, in Parliament. "You should strongly demand answers from the state government on this issue in the Assembly," he said. Following this, the party is now preparing to introduce an adjournment motion and discuss the matter in the budget session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, which begins on February 16th. The state government will be cornered in the Assembly based on a report being prepared based on water samples supplied to the urban areas of Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, and Gwalior, and the expenditure incurred so far for water supply. It is clear that this issue will not be easily resolved after Rahul Gandhi's visit.

Congress leaders attack BJP

Congress leaders say this isn't just a municipal corporation area; the situation is the same across Madhya Pradesh. Despite spending hundreds of crores of rupees, people still lack access to clean water. This is a major government failure. The BJP is merely engaging in lip service in the name of action. Rahul Gandhi visited the scene and shared the pain of the victims, while neither the Chief Minister nor any major national leader from the BJP has visited the affected area.

State Congress President Jitu Patwari said that the Assembly will now question who is responsible for the deaths caused by contaminated water, despite spending hundreds of crores of rupees. Why has no action been taken against those responsible for the Urban Development and Housing Department?

Dispute over compensation amount

The government has provided financial assistance of two lakh rupees to the families of those who died due to contaminated water in Bhagiratha Pura, but the Congress party is demanding that this amount be increased. Rahul Gandhi also presented cheques of one lakh rupees each to the families of those who died as financial assistance.

Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Umang Singhar, also announced a separate financial assistance of 50,000 rupees. Following the Congress's announcement of 1.5 lakh rupees each for the victims, the debate over the amount has intensified. Congress members say that if the opposition can provide 1.5 lakh rupees each, the government should definitely increase the amount.

What did Kailash Vijayvargiya say?

Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said, "We are closely monitoring the situation. We will provide assistance as needed. The citizens of Bhagirathpura are ours. We are always ready to help them."
