News Topical, Digital Desk : Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday leveled serious allegations against Union Home Minister Amit Shah. She said the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in West Bengal was a clever ploy by Amit Shah to topple the 14-year-old Trinamool Congress government, and that she would not allow it to succeed.

Addressing a rally against the SIR in Malda, a border district in North Bengal, Banerjee said the BJP was digging its own grave by revising the voter list just before the assembly elections. "They cannot capture Bengal. The people of Bengal will never support you. Bengal is different from Bihar," she said.

Mamata's serious allegations against Amit Shah

He said the Election Commission's hasty decision to conduct the SIR in Bengal has frightened people. "We haven't said we're against the SIR or the census. But it needs time. You're desperate to do this during the elections. You're behaving like landlords," he said.

"SIR has claimed 39 lives in Bengal, 13 are battling for life in hospitals, and three have attempted suicide. Why is there such a rush for SIR? To harass the state government and derail its development plans before the elections."

I am the watchman of Bengal: Mamata

Banerjee said she is the "chowkidar" of the people of Bengal. "I am assuring the women and sisters of Malda, don't worry, no one will have to go to a detention camp. I am protecting you," she said. She said her party is setting up helpdesks for those left off the voter list during the SIR.

Attacking the BJP, Mamata said that "communal forces" are trying to divide people. "We introduced a resolution in the Assembly and filed a case in the Supreme Court against the Waqf Act. As long as I am there, I will not allow anyone to touch these places. I will not allow the politics of religion. I love all religions."

No need to teach BJP Hindutva: Mamata

Banerjee said the BJP should not try to "teach them Hindutva." We have built the Jagannath Temple and Kalighat Temple in Digha and the skywalk at Dakshineswar. We are setting up a Durga Angan and building a Mahakal Temple. What have you done?

Addressing the gathering, Mamata further said that the BJP is like "bedbugs. They bite until you remove them. They must be removed politically so that Bengal doesn't suffer any more harm."

Banerjee said at a rally in Malda that she had not come to them to ask for votes. "I have not come to ask for votes. I have come to stand with you. Do not be afraid. No one will go to a detention camp. Your name will not be removed. Bengal will be safe."

Amit Shah attacked Mamta

Last month, soon after Banerjee requested Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to stop the SIR in Bengal, Home Minister Shah had said that some parties were on a mission to protect infiltrators.

Without naming any party, he said, 'Stopping infiltration is not only necessary for the security of the country, but it is also necessary to save our democratic system from being corrupted.
