News Topical, Digital Desk : Rumors surrounding the death of Bangladeshi student leader Sharif Osman Hadi have further escalated the situation. Since late Thursday evening, student leaders on Bangladeshi social media have been blaming India for Hadi's death.
India's biggest concern is that the interim government is doing nothing to curb these rumors. Professor Muhammad Yunus's government's statement also failed to clarify the situation, despite India's communication to the Bangladesh government regarding this matter.
India has a keen eye on
However, India is keeping a close eye on the deteriorating situation in the neighboring country but no statement was issued on Friday. Meanwhile, till the time of writing this news late Friday evening, agitating student organizations were continuously threatening to attack the Indian High Commission.
A group of student organizations are raising provocative slogans such as "India Hadi Killer" and "Greater Bangladesh." Student organization leaders are openly posting these anti-India protests on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. A "Long March to the Border" was organized at the Benapole border, where protesters approached the Indian border and chanted slogans.
The protesters also announced a march to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. However, at India's request, security at the High Commission has been increased. Reports indicate that some extremists reached the Indian missions' offices in Chittagong and Sylhet late Thursday night. This is a major concern for India at this time.
India stopped visa related work
On Wednesday, India announced the suspension of visa-related work at all its missions in Bangladesh. Friday was a holiday. Given the current situation, tensions are expected to remain high on Saturday as well. Hadi was shot by assailants in Dhaka last week. He died on December 18 while undergoing treatment in Singapore.
Protesters are calling this a conspiracy by India. Hadi, a prominent figure in the July 2024 uprising, was also the spokesperson for the "Inquilab Manch." He had a reputation as a staunch critic of India. The situation in the capital, Dhaka, has worsened since Hadi's death. A Hindu youth has also been murdered by extremists.
No minister in the interim government or any security agency has issued any statement to quell rumors linking Hadi's death to India. Sources say the Bangladesh police's security arrangements cannot be trusted. This is being seen across the country, with local police arriving only when the situation has completely spiraled out of control.
India-Bangladesh tension
This fuels violence. This problem has persisted since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina's government, leading to increased political instability in the country. Police officers are reluctant to take action against student organizations due to their aggressive nature.
He also has doubts about the attitude of the central and state administrations in this regard. Sources say that further deterioration of the current situation would be in neither Bangladesh's nor India's best interest. Muhammad Yunus is in constant contact with the interim government.
