News Topical, Digital Desk : A video is rapidly going viral on social media, sparking renewed debate about the deteriorating air quality (AQI) in the national capital, Delhi. The video shows the striking contrast between the views from a plane window while flying between Vienna, the capital of Austria, and Delhi, the capital of India.
Instagram user Lakshya Arora captured this video while traveling from Vienna to Delhi. He shared a view of the skylines of both cities, showing the clear blue skies of Austria on one side and the hazy, brown smog that looms over Delhi on the other.
Arora captioned his post, "What my phone captured while traveling from Vienna, Austria to Delhi, India felt like traveling in blurry 90s camera quality from 8K resolution, thanks to the high pollution."
The video shows a frightening difference
The video begins with a strikingly clear landscape of Vienna, with clear skies, rivers, and distant mountain ranges clearly visible. The clip then transitions to an aerial view of Delhi. The plane appears shrouded in thick smog. The screen appears almost gray, with minimal visibility of ground or sky. This stark contrast between the two clips highlights the dire pollution situation in Delhi.
People expressed deep concern
As soon as the video went viral, social media users expressed deep concern and dismay over Delhi's air quality. One user wrote, "This is really scary and worrying! I don't understand why people aren't taking this seriously here." Another user commented, "Populated city or not, pollution shouldn't be on this scale. This isn't a mild haze, it feels like a nuclear explosion."
Another user said, "India really needs to address this problem immediately." Some users even cited poor air quality as a reason for people leaving Delhi for cities like Dubai.
Delhi's air typically deteriorates during winter due to a number of factors, including stubble burning, industrial emissions, vehicular pollution, and low wind speeds, which trap pollutants close to the ground. According to recent reports, the city's AQI has remained in the 'very poor' category for several consecutive days.
