News Topical, Digital Desk : Suspended Punjab Police DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar, arrested in a corruption case, faced disappointment from the Supreme Court on Friday. The Supreme Court refused to entertain Bhullar's petition seeking interim relief.
Seeing the court's negative attitude, Bhullar's lawyer withdrew the petition. Bhullar had filed the petition in the Supreme Court after the Punjab and Haryana High Court denied him interim relief. On Friday, Bhullar's petition was scheduled for hearing before a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant.
Supreme Court dismisses Bhullar's interim relief plea
Bhullar's lawyer Vikram Chaudhary, while opposing the High Court order rejecting the interim relief for release, said that after a long hearing, the High Court refused to grant interim relief saying that the interim relief sought was equivalent to final relief.
The High Court did not provide any reasons for its order. The lawyer argued that this matter involved personal liberty. He argued that the CBI had violated jurisdiction in this case. The state of Punjab had withdrawn its consent to the CBI investigation, yet the CBI entered Punjab.
Petition in Supreme Court against High Court order
West Bengal's case, which involved the state withdrawing its consent to a CBI investigation, is already pending in the Supreme Court. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI, pointed out that Bhullar's regular bail had been rejected, to which lawyer Chaudhary countered that it was a default bail and a charge sheet had been filed in the case. However, the court was unimpressed by the arguments.
After hearing the arguments, as soon as the court wrote in its order that it was not willing to interfere in the matter and the petition was to be dismissed, lawyer Chaudhary sought permission from the court to withdraw the petition.
Crores of cash, gold and watches were recovered from the house.
The court allowed him to withdraw the petition but when the lawyer said that the High Court should be ordered to consider his interim demand, the bench made a sharp remark and said that it would be better if you do not make us open our mouth and do not invite any comments for yourself.
