News Topical, Digital Desk : North India is reeling under severe cold, dense fog, and pollution. Many areas of Punjab recorded minimum temperatures around 4 degrees Celsius, while dense fog and smog in Delhi have reduced visibility to near zero. Fresh snowfall in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand has delighted tourists, but is affecting roads. The India Meteorological Department ( IMD) has issued a special alert for New Year's Eve.
Severe cold in North India
According to IMD , dense to very dense fog will prevail in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh till December 31, which may continue till January 1. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have been experiencing light to moderate snowfall and rain since December 30th due to an active Western Disturbance, which is expected to continue until the New Year. Punjab and Haryana may also experience light rain from December 31st.
Minimum temperature in many areas of Punjab was 4 degrees Celsius.
In Punjab, temperatures in areas like Bathinda and Gurdaspur have dropped by 4-6 degrees, creating a cold wave. In Delhi, the minimum temperature is around 7-9 degrees, but dense fog and pollution have made breathing difficult.
Fog engulfs Delhi
Delhi's AQI has moved from "very poor" to "severe," with many areas exceeding 400. Fog has delayed flights and trains, and visibility is less than 50 meters in many places.
Fresh snowfall in Himachal
Fresh snowfall has blanketed Manali, Shimla, and the upper reaches of Himachal Pradesh, but high-altitude passes are at risk of closure. Dense fog and cold are also affecting Uttarakhand.
Weather experts predict this cold and foggy weather will persist until early January. New Year's Eve revellers are urged to exercise caution when traveling, wear warm clothing, and wear masks.
Fog and pollution have adverse effects on health
The International Monetary Fund (IMD) has warned that fog and pollution can have adverse health effects, and children and the elderly should be especially cautious. This weather pattern could bring challenges into the New Year, but the snowfall in Himachal is good news for tourists.
