News Topical, Digital Desk : Following deaths due to contaminated water in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, questions have been raised about the cleanest city designation. Leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Umang Singhar, on Thursday (January 8) questioned the state's commercial capital's eight consecutive awards as the country's cleanest city, suspecting fraud.
Singhar, a senior Congress leader, visited several areas of Indore and inspected the water quality on the spot. At a press conference, the Congress leader said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government's claims of "cleanliness" and "developed India" have completely failed on the ground, as "poison" is flowing from the taps there.
Question raised on the clean city of Indore
Umang Singhar said that Indore has received the cleanest city award eight times and has come in first place. If people are forced to drink sewage water, the cleanliness rankings are meaningless. There must be some paperwork flaws somewhere.
He asked, "Given the current situation in Indore, how did they receive the award eight times? Government officials know how they obtained the award using forged documents. Singhar questioned whether this is the cleanest city in the country, with a municipal corporation budget of over 8,000 crore rupees, the highest in the state. Yet, citizens are still unable to access clean drinking water."
Contaminated water causes deaths in Indore
The Indore administration has confirmed six deaths so far in the city's outbreak, while locals claim 17 people, including a six-month-old child, died after drinking contaminated water. However, Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava said on January 2 that he had received information about 10 deaths.
Amid these claims, the government distributed compensation to 18 affected families on Tuesday. Singhar visited the areas of Medina Nagar, Khajrana, Bhuri Tekri, Barfani Dham, Krishna Bagh, and Kanadia, located 5 to 18 kilometers from Bhagirathpura, and claimed that tap water in Indore has become "poison."
He said, "I tested the water quality of these areas and the conclusion is that the BJP government's claims of cleanliness and developed India have completely failed on the ground reality."
Smelly and sewage mixed water is coming – Umang Singhar
Umang Singhar said, "From Bhagirathpura to several other areas of Indore, contaminated, smelly and sewage-laden water is coming out of the taps, which is proof that this is not just a problem of one area, but a systemic failure of the entire city administration."
The Congress leader also accused the government of suppressing the truth and claimed that 20 people have died in Indore due to contaminated water. Addressing Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, he said that cleanliness awards don't keep people alive, but rather that clean water is needed to survive, and the state government has failed in this regard.
Demand raised for water quality testing
The Leader of the Opposition demanded a statewide water quality audit and appealed to all public representatives and ordinary citizens to do the same in their respective areas so that the truth can be revealed and people can be saved from death. He demanded that a criminal case be filed, the culprits be prosecuted immediately, and the Indore Mayor resign.
