
News Topical, Digital Desk : Ordering shoes online proved costly for an IIT student. A fraudster, posing as a courier company, defrauded her of ₹1.26 lakh. The victim was also suffering from a fever and a throat infection at the time.
The incident occurred between September 11th and 13th. A case has now been registered at Jodhpur's Karvad police station under fraud and the IT Act. Police have launched a further investigation. How did you get trapped?
He stated that he was studying at IIT. He had ordered a pair of Westside brand slippers on Tata Cliq on September 11th. On September 13th, he received a call from a person claiming to be from Westside's courier department. He informed him that his payment had not been received and had been held.
He then instructed them to pay ₹350.55 via a QR code and sent further instructions via WhatsApp from a mobile number that appeared to be linked to Westside. Subsequently, additional withdrawals of ₹350.05 and ₹350.50 were also made.
The caller then asked me to enter the alleged debit amount and refund code, claiming it was necessary to process the refund. He further stated that a minimum balance of 30,000 rupees was required to initiate the refund. She was suffering from a fever and a throat infection and was taking medication.
Withdrew 48 thousand rupees
So, he believed the scammer and followed his instructions, even urging his friend to link his account as instructed. Later, when he checked, he discovered that 48,000 rupees had been fraudulently withdrawn from his account.
Suspecting fraud, I attempted to transfer the remaining approximately ₹72,000 to my mother's account, but the transfer was not completed due to my daily transaction limit of ₹100,000. Subsequently, ₹46,600 was withdrawn from my account.
How much fraud was committed in total?
Then, additional withdrawals of ₹19,900 and ₹9,999 were made from the friend's account. The fraudster withdrew a total of ₹1,26,350. The victim stated in her report that the names of the numbers from which the calls and calls were made were SK Shahab Ahmed, Avijit Das, and Amankant. Police suspect these names may also be fake.
