News Topical, Digital Desk : The Amarnath Yatra has been suspended ahead of schedule. The administration has decided to suspend the annual Amarnath Yatra a week before its scheduled conclusion. The decision has been taken due to the need to maintain the routes damaged due to recent rains. Officials gave this information on Saturday.

The yatra was to conclude on 9 August

The Amarnath Yatra, which began on July 3 this year, was to conclude on August 9 on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. However, the authorities decided to cut short its duration by a week citing "critical repair and maintenance works" in view of heavy rains. "Due to the recent heavy rains and the need for route maintenance at both Baltal and Pahalgam ends of the Shri Amarnathji Yatra route, the Yatra has been closed on both routes," Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri said here.

410,000 devotees visited

He said, "It was observed that we will not be able to resume the yatra from tomorrow due to the continuous deployment of workers and machinery on the route. Hence, the yatra will remain suspended from both the routes from August 3." Bidhuri said that this year more than 410,000 pilgrims have visited the holy cave shrine. In comparison, last year more than 510,000 pilgrims had visited.

Bad weather worsened the situation

Earlier, the Amarnath Yatra was postponed till August 3 in view of the safety of the pilgrims. This step was taken because repair and maintenance work was going on on both the routes of the pilgrimage after heavy rains. But due to continuous bad weather, it was finally decided to postpone the Yatra from August 3.

It is said that recently there was heavy rain on both Pahalgam and Baltal routes in the Yatra area, so after this heavy rain, there is an urgent need to do maintenance work on the Baltal route. But now since there is less time left in the Yatra and repair work is not possible in that time. In view of the risk, it has been decided to postpone the Amarnath Yatra from August 3.
