News Topical, Digital Desk : Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help in preventing road accidents and controlling vehicular pollution in the country. Pankaj Agarwal, an official with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, said during the India AI Impact Summit in the national capital that there is a huge potential for integration of AI in the road and transport industry.

He also said that including driving in the curriculum in schools can help in this direction.

AI and Road Safety

During a panel discussion on data-driven solutions to enhance road safety in India, he said AI can play a crucial role in preventing accidents and reducing fatalities. He said data shows that the number one problem related to traffic violations is speeding.

Therefore, AI can help in gathering accurate data and providing evidence without human intervention.

"If there's technology that allows drivers to self-correct before a collision through vehicle-to-vehicle communication technology, there's a lot of potential for AI," he said, adding that AI could help maintain accurate data on accidents and fatalities.

Death rate in Bihar is higher than the national average

Giving the example of Bihar, he said that according to the data, the death rate in Bihar is higher than the national average.

Regarding pollution, Agarwal said, "We are developing AI tools for this as well, as the environment is a major problem in cities." He added that the government is also taking steps to improve pollution control, as data can be misrepresented.

He also suggested making AI-assisted driving a part of the school curriculum, as it could create awareness among young people. IIT Madras is working on this.
