Venezuela is Cuba's largest oil supplier. Trump has said that once Venezuela stops supplying Cuba with oil and money, the Cuban government will collapse.
Trump gave an ultimatum
On January 3, 2025, US forces invaded the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, and arrested President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Trump has been repeatedly threatening Cuba since then.
Attack on Venezuela
Following the coup in Venezuela, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez has been appointed interim president. Trump says the Venezuelan government will now act at the behest of the United States. Meanwhile, a US human rights organization has declared the US attack on Caracas a violation of international law.
Cuba rejects Trump's offer
Trump had offered a compromise to Cuba. However, responding to Trump's threats, the Cuban President made it clear that he would not surrender to the US. He said that the US cannot forcefully pressure Cuba.
