News Topical, Digital Desk : Artemis II launch: NASA's Artemis II mission successfully lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at approximately 3:54 a.m. on April 2, 2026. This is a very special and historic moment, as after nearly 54 years, humans are once again heading to the Moon. The mission includes four astronauts: Mission Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialists Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen.

The Artemis-2 mission is the first manned mission to take humans to the Moon in 54 years. This is not just a routine flight, but is considered the beginning of a new era of human space travel. This is the first time humans have been to the Moon since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. In this mission, four astronauts will orbit the Moon aboard the Orion spacecraft and then return safely to Earth. This is not a lunar landing mission, but it will strengthen preparations for future lunar landings and long-term stays there.

Why again towards the moon after 54 years?

After the Apollo program ended in 1972, the US halted its lunar exploration efforts. Political and budgetary considerations then led to a shift in focus to low Earth orbit. However, the situation has changed. Scientists have discovered signs of water, minerals, and other vital resources on the Moon, which are considered crucial for the future space economy. This led to the launch of the Artemis program.

Why is Artemis II special?

Artemis II is the second and most important mission of this entire program. It is the mission that will once again take humans to the Moon. It will not land directly on the Moon, but will fly around the Moon to prepare for future missions.

Relying on experienced astronauts

This time, NASA is prioritizing experienced astronauts over newcomers. Mission commander Reid Wiseman is 50 years old and will become the oldest person ever to walk on the moon. Previously, this record was held by Alan Shepard, who walked on the moon at the age of 47. Team members Victor Glover and Jeremy Hansen are also older than Shepard, while Christina Koch is only 72 days younger.

First non-American astronaut

Another significant aspect of this mission is that Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency will be the first non-American astronaut to travel to the Moon. This will be his first space flight. He is at a slight risk of "space adaptation syndrome," so he will exercise extreme caution initially. This mission will also strengthen the relationship between the United States and Canada.

Victor Glover's Historical Role

Pilot Victor Glover will make history on this mission. He will become the first Black astronaut to walk near the Moon. He has previously flown to the International Space Station and was the first person to pilot SpaceX's Dragon capsule. He will also briefly control the Orion capsule manually during this mission.

Christina Koch's new achievement

Christina Koch will set another record in this mission. She will be the first woman to travel beyond low Earth orbit to the Moon. Previously, she held the record for a continuous stay of 328 days on the space station and was part of the first all-female spacewalk team.
