News Topical, Digital Desk : Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara is in trouble. A Bengaluru court has ordered a case to be filed against him for allegedly placing a ₹500 bet during a kabaddi match.
The controversy stems from a statement he made during a state-level pre-university college kabaddi tournament held in Tumakuru. It was reported that Parameshwara had made a friendly bet of 500 rupees with District Deputy Commissioner Shubha Kalyan that the Vijayapura team would win the match. However, the Dakshina Kannada team won the match, defeating Vijayapura 36-26. Later, while presenting the prize to the winning team, the minister publicly mentioned this bet.
Court order after complaint
A private complaint was filed by a person named HR Nagbhushan, who argued that placing bets publicly, even in jest, is against the law and should not be done by a person holding a constitutional office.
Hearing the complaint, the 42nd Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Bengaluru directed the police to register an FIR and investigate the matter. This court is presided over by Judge KN Shivakumar. It is noteworthy that the police department falls under the Home Department, which is under the Home Minister's responsibility.
