HMPV i.e. Human Metapneumovirus spreading in China has now entered India as well. So far 7 cases of this virus have been reported in the country. On this virus, the Health Ministry says that this is not a new virus and has already spread in India.

In such a situation, along with taking precautions, it is also very important to have the right information. Therefore, to know the answers to some questions related to this virus, we spoke to Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Grover, Head of Critical Care and Pulmonology at CK Birla Hospital. Let us know about the treatment and vaccine of HMPV-

Is there a cure for HMPV?

Doctors say that there is no specific anti-viral treatment for HMPV . Its treatment mainly requires patient care. Its symptoms are relieved with the help of ample rest, hydration and in severe cases, fever-reducing medicines and oxygen therapy. People at high risk such as children, the elderly or people with weak immunity may need to be hospitalized. To avoid this, it is important to maintain hand hygiene and avoid coming in contact with infected persons.

How can it be treated currently?

Currently, supportive care is needed to treat HMPV, as there is no specific anti-viral drug for it . Its symptoms can be controlled with the help of rest and hydration. Also, in severe cases, oxygen therapy or ventilatory support may also be required.

Can the corona vaccine be effective on this?

The doctor said that the corona (COVID-19 Vaccine) vaccine is not effective on it, because both viruses are different. HMPV needs its own special vaccine, on which research is still going on. In such a situation, the effective way to prevent it is to maintain good hygiene and keep distance from infected persons.

What tests are available to detect HMPV?

Specialized tests such as PCR (HMPV Identification Tests) can be used to detect HMPV. This test determines the presence of the virus in a respiratory sample. Rapid antigen tests and viral culture can also be used for diagnosis. However, PCR is the most accurate and commonly used test (HMPV Virus Detection Tests) to confirm HMPV, especially in hospitals and labs.
