Justin Trudeau has left Canada. Mark Carney has started working as the new Prime Minister. Preparations for the upcoming elections have also begun. But there has been no change in India's stance regarding improving relations with Canada.
India has made it clear that there can be hope of a major improvement in relations with Canada only if concrete action is taken against those working against India's interests. However, there has been no indication from the new Canadian government that there will be any change in the existing policies to bring relations with India back on track. Experts believe that the new government after the elections will try to improve the relations between the two countries.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said, "India-Canada relations deteriorated when extremists and separatists were given license there. We hope to revive relations based on mutual trust and sensitivity."
Trudeau had accused India
Former PM Trudeau had accused India in late 2023 that its agencies had killed some Canadian citizens. This also included the murder of Harjeet Singh Nijjar. Nijjar was a Khalistani terrorist who was wanted by India's investigative agencies. Later, this dispute escalated so much that both countries called back their High Commissioners. India strongly opposed these allegations and even accused Trudeau of promoting anti-India activities for political reasons.
