A major plane accident has taken place in South Korea. A plane carrying 181 people crashed at Muan International Airport. 62 people have been confirmed dead in this accident, while the death toll may increase.

 

A video of the accident has surfaced, in the video the plane is seen sliding away from the runway and then collides with a wall. After the collision, there is a loud explosion in the plane.

 

Flames rose in the sky

Within seconds, thick black smoke begins to rise in the sky. The video also shows flames engulfing some parts of the plane. In the video, it appears that the plane attempted a 'belly landing' (without fully extending its landing gear) a few seconds before the crash.

There were 181 passengers on board the plane, including six crew members. So far, two people, a passenger and a flight attendant, have been found alive, local media reported. Rescue operations are underway and officials are trying to evacuate passengers from the rear of the jet. Emergency services at the airport began at around 9 am after the plane crashed. At least 32 fire engines and a large number of firefighters have been deployed at the accident site.

South Korea's acting President Choi Sang-mok ordered all possible rescue efforts. He instructed officials in a statement, "All relevant agencies should mobilize all available resources to rescue the personnel." His Chief of Staff also called an emergency meeting on the incident. The accident is believed to have been caused by bird contact, resulting in a failure of the landing gear.
