Paris. France seems to be heading towards a hung parliament. Exit polls after Sunday's parliamentary elections show no coalition getting a majority. The leftist coalition unexpectedly seems to be gaining a lead, leaving the right-wing coalition behind.
This election is a big setback for the right-wing Marine Le Pen's National Rally, as it was believed that the National Rally would win. However, the National Rally party's seats have increased compared to the last election. Results of most constituencies are expected to come by Monday morning.
Know who is likely to win?
The official results have not been announced yet, but according to the exit polls, the leftist coalition is expected to get 172 to 215 seats out of 577. French President Emmanuel Macron's coalition may get 150-180 seats. Marine Le Pen's National Rally party was considered a strong contender for victory, but it is seen getting only 115 to 155 seats.
Targeting Macron for the defeat, Le Pen said that the National Rally lost due to strategic voting. National Rally party president Jordan Bardella accused Macron of creating 'uncertainty and instability'. He said that France has been put in the hands of the leftists.
Option of dialogue if there is no clear majority
Meanwhile, French leftist leader Raphaël Glucksmann said on Sunday that openness to dialogue was essential in a parliament in which no party had a clear majority. Leftist leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon urged Macron to invite the leftist New Popular Front coalition to form a government.
At the same time, Macron's office said that the President will wait until the formation of the new National Assembly before taking any decision. Macron and his ruling coalition have faced the anger of voters on the issue of inflation, immigration and security.
According to the French constitution, new parliamentary elections cannot be held for a year, so if no coalition gets a majority, there will be a year of instability. The euro fell after exit polls indicated instability in parliament.
